I've heard mention of replacing the stock radiator with one from a 91-94 Explorer. How benificial is this? And what kind of price should I expect to pay?
I've checked prices for a stock replacement from a salvage yard, and the best I've found is $45. Does this sound reasonable?
However this also raised a question. They asked if it was an automatic or manual, yet mine has a seperate transmission cooler for the automatic tranny, so what gives? Is the cooler standard on the Eddie Bauers or is this something that someone added aftermarket? Also, since I have the cooler, do I really need to get the one for an automatic? It doesn't seem like I would need to, and I would think I could get a larger radiator if I didn't have to worry about that part.
Transmission cooler comes with all the automatics as a standard.. it's not aftermarket. It also shouldn't mess with the radiator much either.
The 91-94 Explorer radiator swap is a major plus. Helps with the cooling drastically. I haven't done this swap yet, but it is in the near future. I'm not sure about prices though.
If the tranny cooler is standard, then what's the difference between the radiators on the autos versus the manual trannys? Or did the guys at the salvage yards just want to cover all their bases? Does anyone know for sure if I NEED a radiator specific to an auto, or if I can get just any radiator that will fit?
one line runs from the tranny to the cooler to the radiator then the other line runs straight back to the radiator on automatics. that's why he asked if it was automatic or manual
i put in one from a 92 explorer the auto radiators have a built in cooler for the tranny's
and an external one mounted outside. i replaced both with a engine oil and tranny cooler fan. the ex is 2 1/4 inches thick. 2core auto are hd manuals are standard and have no built-in cooler. meaning to connections other than upper and lower hoses.
before i did the swap my cooling arrow was at O AND R in between .
no it's set at A and L in between. tranny runs better too. plus i have a flex-a-lite fan with a custom spacer installed enough to give my rad the air it needs. and i have a back-up 16inch flex-a-lite mounted where i had my ac/condensor.
I would get a new one if you can. Most all of them have a lifetime warrentee. Most junkyards are 30-90 day at best. I paid $117 for a 2 core auto shipped to my door.
I may be mistaken also but I thought that the standard tranny coolers are still a single core. Might be worth checking on.
My tranny cooler is single core and I think my tranny is double core so that means that it is aftermarket?
Not entirely sure what you mean. The stock external trans cooler is a small single row unit. You run your lines from the trans, into the radiator cooler, to the external cooler and back to the trans.
There is a difference between the auto/manual radiators as well as a/c no a/c if you get on you want the auto trans a/c heavy duty radiator this one will cool very well and will even work with a V-8
I believe all B2 radiators were single row. From what I have heard, some 90 models may have had the 2 row, but my '90 didn't. I would guess that if you have a 2 row in your B2 it is a replacement.
