I have a 289 in my 68 mustang, I had a mild cam, heads ported and polished, 625 carter carb on an aluminum holly intake, and hedman headers installed on it with 2" dual exhaust.
I was given a 1974 351 windsor with rv cam, edelbrock performer intake and 625 carter carb. I cant say for sure but I think my 289 has around 240- 250 horse. I am thinking of pulling out the 289 and dropping in the 351. I wonder how much more horse if any the 351 will give me, can anyone give me a guesstimate as to what kind of power you think this 351w might have?
My guess would be that with factory compression and unported factory heads on the 351 you want see much HP gain although there would be an increase in torque. The 74s were at the beginning of the smog time.
I don't remember the HP rating of the 351w in those days but I aggree you probably won't see much if any improvement over the 289. Torque is another matter I would expect about a 25% increase over the 289, especially with an RV cam in her. Should make for an impressive launch and lots of tire smoke!
The 351 you're getting is setup for being a torque monster. It won't have very much horsepower, below 200. Probably around 170ish...the stock 351 in a 90 EFI truck were 185hp.
If you want that 351 to be right in the mustang, you'd atleast have to change the cam to one ment for the vehicle. The RV cam won't be so sweet. If you want, you can do some performance mods on the 351 to get it's horsepower up, it's easy to get good power out of them, but that 351 is significantly heavier then the 289...I duno if you really want all that extra weight on the front of that thing.
