Just started to experence key problem 2 weeks ago,key extreamly hard to turn,I replaced key switch still seems hard to turn,now i,m having trouble getting truck to start,it has a tilt wheel and by messing with wheel and moving gear selecter it will start up,by the way when i do get key to turn it does not return to run position by it self ,anyone have an idea,nother switch mabee?,its an 84 f-150,auto trans.

It is most likely the actual ignition switch which is mounted on the column up under the dash. There is an internal spring that should return the key from start and also has all the electrical contacts in it.
Fairly cheap part, about $15-20 if I remember right. Two nuts hold it on but getting to it means either being very flexible or better, taking the dash instrument cluster off.
If that isn't it, then it is the internal brass gear thing in the column and I have no idea how to change that. Hopefully it is the switch.
dropping the column down to allow access(even with an automatic) is probably easier than removing the instrument cluster. Two bolts under the dash(easy access), lay it on the seat, and access to the switch is right there in front of you.
