92 F150 4.9L
Reverse is fine but when put in D its like it's in neutral. I can push the OD button off and everything seems fine. Any ideas what could cause this??
Codes are
1-1-1 OK
4-5-2 VSS
6-2-8 Converter Clutch Lock-up error
Thanks for any help!!

Bad coil pack and/or low tranny fluid maybe...it's hard to diagnose electronic trans problems over the net.

Do you mean when the OD light is on the truck moves and with it off the truck is like in neutral, if so then I had the same problem a few years back and the trans guy at Jets said it was the forward sprag got unhooked inside the tranny. He said possible causes are but not limited to putting the trans in drive while still moving in reverse and towing wile the OD is still on (light off). Never had one apart yet so can't help you there, Good Luck

This sure sounds like the problem. No idea how it was drove, I just bought
this PU. Any idea if a person, mechanically inclined, can check these and
fix it themselves, or is it a $1,000 fix at the shop?
Thanks for the replies!!

Likely a failed O/D one-way clutch. It has to hold 1st, 2nd and 3rd and then overrun in 4th. It is not holding but when you cancel o/d it brings on the coast clutch (main purpose is for engine braking on decel 1st through 3rd) but it also holds (when applied) the same drum as the o/d owc, so in effect is doing the job of the owc when applied (o/d canceled). The only friction type clutch that has to hold for 1st is the forward clutch (used 1st through 4th) and if you can move forward in any gear then you know it works. Looks like the trans will have to come out for proper repair.
