First off...great forum! Now to make a long story short...
I've read some conflicting info on the speedo drive gear for my truck
I don't know the transfer case model so perhaps that is a factor but here is what I've read...some posts and info on other sites state that the drive gear teeth for the speedo are machined into the output shaft, either 6,7,8, or 9 teeth [I would assume metal since the term used is machined]
other posts state that this gear can be removed and replaced along with the speedo drivin gear and is made of plastic, hmm...which is it machined steel or a replaceable plastic sleeve? TCI shows a bunch of drivin gears for the speedo but say nothing about a drive gear.
Ok now here is my situation...I bought this truck and the speedometer dident work so I started with replacing the cable and I shortly found that when I turned it by hand from the tranny end the gauge worked so I surmised that the drivin gear was worn and I replaced it with one with the same number of teeth, ok now the gauge works but is bouncy and way off the mark prolly 20% to fast, ie: about 40 mph and the gauge shows 55 to 60, ok I got enough info here to realize that the new cable needs some lube and that will most likely cure the bounce, I also ran some calcs at another site http://home.att.net/~jroal/drive.htm and decided that I prolly need a 16 tooth drivin gear instead of the stock 18 tooth I just bought, so now while Im waiting for the fedex man can anyone tell me about the drive gear?
If it is replaceable where might I find one to match my drivin gear, a google search has not turned up much info. TIA
