a/c problem

My 98 Ranger currently is blowing warm air. I went ahead and bought a kit and the gauges read fine, showing the proper pressure. However, after further checking things over, the condenser is not kicking on or off. I do not have an owner's manual on this truck, so I started checking fuses over one by one, and have not found anything blown. I can pretty much do anything on this truck and figure things out, but A/C problems are new to me. Can someone help me out here? I am hoping that I do not have to go out and buy a new condenser.

Ok, I'll assume that you mean the compressor is not engaging and the condensor (located in front of the radiator) is fine. I'm not sure what pressure you've got, but the compressor should engage with maybe 45 PSI in the system. Lacking sufficient pressure in the system (ie, loss of charge) will cause the low pressure cutout to not allow the compressor to engage. What did the gauges show? Assuming there is sufficient pressure, the next step will be to trace an electrical problem. Don't overlook checking for a good ground.

My bad, I meant compressor, thanks for correcting me. You hit it on the head, I was showing around 40-45 on the gauge. My first guess was I thought maybe I was low on the R-134 refrigerant. My A/C ran cold all of the time, until last year. It was cool, but not like in years past. I never did anything to it, because we really didn't have that hot of a summer.
