I ride a bicycle (road bike), and use dumbells, pretty regularly.
I can pick up almost any kind of exercise equipment I want on "bulk trash day" in the neighborhood.
People buy this stuff, and don't use it more than a few times. I actually have picked up a few things, and they eventually went back into the trash.
It's just that when using indoor training equipment, time seems to stand still. Even a "trainer" for indoor bicycle use is incredibly boring, and I love cycling.
My husband found a professional heavy duty bench with leg attachment with Olympic 45lb 7ft barbell/plates after my first semester of taking college lifting course. It also came with a preacher curl setup and some extras. All this from a local St. Vincent dePaul's. This way I could continue lifting between that first year's worth of semesters and workout at home after the year was up. Been using it for the last 2 1/2 years now three days aweek to keep up the routine.
Since getting it, I have added a couple of adjustable dumbbells w/plates and a standard Ivanko barbell with plates.
For cardio, I have a mountain bike. Never liked the stationary ones.

I agree about the trainer - even with a 'classic' racing tape in the vcr. I used to commute to work on my road bike, but we moved to an office without a shower, so I'm done with that. I've only been out on my bike once so far this summer...too much house renovation and landscaping to be done....
I have a really nice workout bench and exercise cycle. My birds love it.
Isn't bowling considered an exercise?
You know how much of a workout it is to throw a 17 lb. bowling ball, and then have to walk up 3 steps to order another round of beers and an order of nachos-n-cheese?
2400 pounds of various freeweights, a squat cage, and am waiting for the EX to get her junk out of the house so I can set it all up in the living room.
Every bit of it iron or steel. I have four one hundred pound standard Dan Lurie plates cast in iron from india....
