I know how you feel. There are alot of times (now for instance) that I have nothing at all to do at work. I'm wondering if your job's like mine though where you have to at least act like you're doing something productive (i.e. sitting, staring at the monitor). I would read books if I could, maybe you could do that? But like others have said, count yourself lucky that you have a job, and try to use your spare time as usefully as possible...like reading websites about your trade, etc. I wouldn't leave though. Being on unemployment is even more boring and the pay is worse
Or you could come over here and work with me, it should only be about a 2- 1/2 hour commute...each way! Know anything about steel buildings? We'll be putting up 2 of them, about 50,000 sq. ft. total. At least I get to feel like I'm accomplishing something, if I had to go to work and just sit all day, I think I'd go nuts. The days must feel about 18 hours long for you. Talk to the powers that be, knock 'em over the head with a 2X4 to get their attention! -TD
Those who act like leaders, become leaders. Certainly with all of your freetime you have seen other things that could be fixed, should be fixed, or maybe just done differently to become more efficient. Watch for a couple of days, write down what you see.
Pick it apart and write up a proposal about what powers you have that you would lend to make the entire operation more efficient. You might include the wasted time that you personally have had. Sometimes, management doesn't have the time - what with their congressional style committee forming and meeting attendance - to actually see what is going on. They might be aware they are losing money from the bottom line and they don't know where to find the hole. If you put something together and increase productivity or add more to the bottom line you may find yourself in a bigger and better position entirely.
If nothing else, it will speak volumes for your initiative which is ALWAYS a positive thing to have going for you.
I have to admit, this is kind of a funny thread to read, because I don't have this problem now ...but I did. For a variety of reasons, I retired six years ago- and about kissed the ground because I was able to. It was fun for about three years. I part-timed with my previous employer, got involved with the kids stuff, helped the wife start a new career, played house husband. After four years it wasn't as much fun, by 5 years I was about going crazy.
The solution was to bide my time and find work that I truly enjoyed, with an employer I could get along with and shared my business philosophies. The whole thing kind of presented itself...and I've been running like a madman ever since (thanks guys! ). Soooo...keep your skills sharp and your eyes open- things will work out when you least expect them to.
I still haven't seen what I would do. Why don't you find some job for night, and then go to work the next day and sleep. Get paid at "work" lol. Okay.. I was just kidding. What are you allowed to do at work? Maybe you could start building websites and sell them, of find some new found interest on the internet. Find something that you'll look forward to do while you're there, and something that will keep you occupied for the next 9 months.
I'm almost in the exact same boat, except about the excellent pay. Took almost all the work away except for answering the phone when (IF) it rings. Spend all day surfing, the only thing thats allowed... shesh! After a year and a half I'm brain dead and seriouosly depressed. There are no other jobs around here and moving is out...
Don't let this happen to you. Find a way out and get your life back on track
I think greywolf has the right idea see if you can replace the absentee boss.
and no offence about the programmer thing i just kinda put it together from your sig.
No offence taken, I just like to have a reason to use the work monkey (code monkey, trunk monkey)
Replacing the absent boss? Contractors can't be supervisors and there is currently a hiring freeze. I know this because I actually applied for what seems like an awesome full time positon there and was having my resume reviewed when the freeze came down. Too bad, I'm sure I would have gotten it...
Popa Tim - what you describe is almost my worst nightmare, I'd almost rather be unemployed than do nothing all day. Personality flaw I guess. 3 months is bad but 1 1/2 years? Ouch.
It's been 6 months and guess what - no change! I've been a trooper and tried everything; taking initiative as best I can, looking for work that needs to be done, etc. What I've determined is that this place is so dis-organized and chaotic that this is what a LOT of people here are doing while others work 14 hours a day. Weird! The work force here is way too compartmentalized to be a healthy work environment.
So as of this past Monday the resume has been dusted off and the job search has begun. I have an interview today with a company that would put me to work in my area of expertise AND I'd get to travel. Maybe even meet some of the cool people on this board Wish me luck!
