5.4 Engine Knocking

Hi all. My buddy has a 1998 f-150 4x4 with the 5.4 in it. After a trip pulling his boat, he started it up for the first time a couple of days ago and the engine is knocking. I listened to it, and I can't tell if it sounds like a bent valve, or a rod knock. With the engine shoved so far back in the truck, it's hard to isolate the sound. Is there any way I can determine whether it is a rod or valve, or piston slap without having to take it to a shop? I unplugged the coils on each cylinder on the passenger side and the sound did not change. It also sounds like it is indeed coming from the passenger side, but again...the noise is hard to isolate. I know I could also do a compression test on each cylinder to see if any of the valves or pistons are bad. But, is there anything else I can do to determine what the problem is, or is there a known issue with these engines?

Is the noise there after the engine warms up too?

yes. it is there after the engine is warm, and stays constant with rpm's as you rev it too.
