97 expedition, 80% of the time i go to take off from a stop, there is like a grinding shaking problem that seems to come from the rear. when put in reverse, it will do it also, but not all the time, just most of the time. ive had rear end checked and was told it was fine. when it was taken to a specialist, of course it didnt do it till the next day! arghhh!!! now im thinking maybe u-joint wore out or something with drive shaft. but its weird and only does it at a take off. if you are already going on the road and give more gas it dont do it, just when you take off and it is irritating bad, not to mention might be serious too. if anyone has any suggestions i would appreciate it greatly. it almost feels like driving on a dirt road kind of, if i let off of gas it stops...hmmmm.....
If this is a 4WD, when was the last time the transfer case fluid was changed? About every 15K my 99 shudders from a dead start. Replace the A4WD transfer case fluid and the problem goes away. Not sure if your 97 is equipped the same.
I have the same problem, I was told to change out the rear fluid and to add the friction modifier.... I did all that and it didnt help. Many thread posts indicate if the fluid change doesnt cure the issue then its the clutch packs that need to be replaced. I havent inquired as to how much that is yet....
well i got under there and the transfer case (where the rear drive shaft goes out of) has like thick grease that looks to have oozed out a bit and the spinning of the rear drive shaft has splashed it on the bottom of vehicle if that makes any sense. hmmmm...
