I've rebuilt Carter, Edelbrock, and Holley before...and Q-jets. Seems everybody has their favorites...honestly I've had good success with all of them...I just rebuilt an Edelbrock 1405...that is the one I was mentioning earlier...it's a 600 cfm. It ran so good on the 455 that I'm planning on using it on my 390 build now. As long as the carb is sized and jetted properly I think you'll be happy with any of these brands. As for size, I think a 650 cfm is about the best...600 really is a little on the small size if you want to hit revs above 5500 or so...but unless you've done some real serious engine building and looking for very high rpms a 750 is too much carb. Since you already have the Carter AFB why not give it a try. Then if you do change the carb you'll at least have a point of reference to see if you're making a difference or not.

the rebuild kit from summit for all Carter AFBs is only $25. CRT-902317A This beats the hell out of $350 for now. I am just not sure after reasing some of these post about rebuilding it myself. How hard is it really? What all has to be done the the Carter? Maybe does someone have an exploded diagram of the Carter?

The kit will have the diagram...it's not difficult...just be careful to remember how it came apart and put it back the same way. If you have a digital camera take some closeup pictures...they're really great for reference. I use that carb cleaner that comes in gallon cans with dipping container. I think it's call B-9 Chem dip. It's much better to soak the parts overnight in this type of cleaner. Unfortunately the main body won't fit in the one gallon container. I have a 2 1/2 gallon bucket that I fill up with this cleaner to soak the bodies in. Careful on nonmetallic items though. I don't know what float your carb has. If it's the black phenolic then don't put it in the cleaner as it will damage it. It's ok for the copper floats.

Anytime you start dealing with a carb with metering roads they are a pain in the butt. I have rebuilt hundreds of Q-Jets, 2-jets and Carters and a Holley is ten times simpler. For a long time you never saw any AFBs until they quit making the Q-Jets. Then they start showing up as the latest thing. Hell, the Hemi's used to come with a pair of AFBs back in the sixties. Never saw so many carb fires except with the 4 barrel carbs on the Ford 292s and 312s.
