In my 04 E350, when I put the vehicle into gear on level ground and take my foot off the brake the van just sits there. All the other automatic equipped vehicles I have had would roll on their own. Where my problem really comes in is when I am trying to finesse it in or out of a tight area or maneuver a trailer. The thing won't move unless I give it gas and then it often wants to jump instead of creeping along smoothly. My question is, do I have a problem or is this normal for this transmission? I would be hard pressed to conviince the dealer there is a problem without more overt signs of trouble or at least a comparison to other similar vehicles. Oh yeah, I have the 5.4 V8 with 3.73 diff.
First, I doubt an E350 would have a 4R70W in it. It should be a 4R100W. While I haven't driven many 04 E350s I think I would have remembered if they didn't creep. The 5.4 motor would have a high stall torque converter in it and the higher the stall the less creep. You _may_ have a problem. Not moving at idle can be a low pressure situation so that the clutches are not holding until the pump volume comes up.
To be sure you can ask the dealer about it and have them do a line pressure test. If the line pressure in "Drive" at idle is within spec, you should be OK. If its below spec, there is your proof of a problem.
I double checked the code, it's a 4R75W. I knew it wasn't a 4R100W. The transmission fluid is full, pink and doesn't smell burned. The van is a program vehicle I bought at 15K miles. It has been like this since I bought it, but it was really noticeable this weekend when I was backing an empty trailer and I couldn't go slow enough. The symptoms are there in both forward and reverse.
My 2004 E350 has the 4R75W also. Does anyone know more about it yet? Mine is a twelve seater that did not come with a trailer hitch. Would this be the tranny if it had a tow package?
I have noticed that the problem isn't always there and is only really annoying when I need to creep along and the thing doesn't want to move until I give a fair amount of gas then suddenly jumps (lots of sweating going on in close quarters there). Anyway I think the 4R75W is the only trans with the 5.4 whether you have tow package or not. So far it looks like the only thing my van didn't already have from the tow package is the hitch and 7 pin connector. All relays, fuses and extra coolers are there. If you want to wire up a 7 pin connector to yours see my previous posts on the subject.
Mine's Toreador Red with tan interior see my gallery for pics after I put on factory running boards. It was a program vehicle with 15k on it when I bought it. The price was right and so far I love it. Sometimes I kind of wish I had the V10 though.
Mine was either a rental or program with 20k on it. Silver with the running board. It is replacing a 92 150 clubwagon Chateau. I miss my keyless entry but not ready to pay for it, yet. The price was good on mine also.
