Most engines that tossed a rod won't start, but if a fliter blew off, and it wasn't shut down in time.....the damage is likely done. The obvious compression test, test for spark, fuel(you've mentioned it had fuel, but is it flowing?) come to mind.
I was wondering if the truck had a fuel injected 302, because some fuel injected engines will not allow the fuel pump to run if there is no oil pressure in the engine.
I am not sure if this is the case with this motor or not. just thought I would mention it.
Is this a fuel injected engine, if so read on.
I had a similiar problem with my 86 XLT. Turned out I was not getting power to the high pressure in line fuel pump (not the pump in the tank). The battery had shifted and broke the ground which just happens to be a seperate wire to the ground side of the battery post. There are a lot things that could cause the problem you described. The more details you can give the better.
