I just got a 351M because it was cheap ($0). It runs well despite 250,000 miles. I plan to rebuild it, and build it up a bit with mostly low end, for a truck of course. From what I know, I think it can be made into a 400 easily, with just a crank. Any other mod's that will increase displacement or power? Are parts from the 460, 429 compattable? I will go to after market if I have too, but if I could find some nice used heads that will give more power, it would be great.
Also, I would like to swap a 9" rear into my 89 F150 for strength, and it's easier to change gear ratio. Has anyone done this, or know about it? Will my rear ABS be a big problem? Has anyone converted a 9" to a full floater? Thanks in advance, and Merry Christmas.

I had a buddy relate a story: He was driving his girlfriend's mom's car with a 351M in it and high centered the oil pan in a parking lot mishap. He was responsible for fixing this. He spied a dead 429 and thought that the oil pan looked the same. He in fact used that oil pan and it bolted right on. I'm guessing that a 460 would too since it is in the same engine family as a 429. Distributors are also shared between 351C,351M,400,429,460. 351M and 400 are of the same family so most pieces will interchange.
almost nothing will interchange between a 385 series(429-460-370) and a 335 series hybrid(351m/400) the oil pan will interchange between a modified engine and a 351c. go and get a 400 crank and then get a piston kit for a 1971 400 they had 9.5 to one compression, and better cam timing. then go get some 77-78 unleaded heads from a lincoln with a 400 (flow like 71's but hardened seats)you will get a 400 with 260hp and 400 ft/lb torque. then go get an edelbrock performer intake and a legal 4v carb and go have fun.
I beleive it's warn that makes a full floater conversion kit for the ford 9". I read about it in on of the four wheel magazines. It didn't state what the cost was. It looked like a pretty good setup, and came with a set of locking hubs to disengage the rear axle in case of breakage when off road. You can get warns address and phone on the web, or in just about any truck magazine. Mark.
