On the passenger side, and I need to at least get the window up to keep moisture out of the truck (98 F150 XLT); I've taken the door panel off and looked at it, but don't see any good way to get at the window motor to take it off and put the window up (as well as getting it off to test it and replace it tomorrow morning)
Suggestions are heartily welcome, since I don't want to do too much on it since I just got it 3 weeks ago and junk's already breaking on it.
I had the same problem with my 98 F150 drivers window. Although which side does not matter. All I had to do was take it apart and grease it up and it's been working fine ever since. Motors are about $50.00 if you need one. The passenger side started to do the same thing a while later so I did that side too and all is fine. It's a bit of a job to do but not to complicated. The biggest problem is that the motor is bolted to the slide mechanism and that is RIVETED to the door. Who knows why? (Six Rivets) They will have to be drilled out and replaced with Short - Short bolts. I think 1/2" so they don’t interfere with the operation of the window when it travels up and down. Use lock washers too. Do not unbolt the motor without securing the counter spring. I drilled a hole through the slide mechanism and bolted it so it could not move. The spring is strong. Then remove the motor if necessary. You can test it when the slide mechanism with the motor is removed from the door. Just plug in the electric and try it out. Be careful how you hold on to it. There are posts about removing the door panel if you don't know how it comes off. Do a search on door panel removal.
I'm a little word-e this morning but the job takes a couple hours and it's not too tough. My cost was $0.75 for six nuts, blots and washers.
Thanks; I went out the next morning (Monday I guess?) and tried it for good luck and it went right straight up, where it's stayed since...don't want to risk it, once I'm back with the tools this weekend I'll take a look at it.
If you take a rubber mallet and rap on the bottom of the door you can sometimes get the motor to function again temporarily. That link details panel removal and motor replacement BTW.
