I am thinking about replacing the engine compartment wiring and th dash wiring in my 93 bronco. It has a 'obd1" with one from a 96 whitch has a obd2 computer i beleive. How performance wise will this help me? oh, the 96 was totaled in a wreck, and the 93 just burned up its dash wiring. Is it as easy as i hope it is? anyone have experience with this? i'm running out of options with my baby!!
You are talking about "apples and oranges". You will need EVERYTHING from the 96. The 96 is mass air injection (your 93 is speed density) and the EEC computer is completely different. The first major discrepancy that I can think of beyond that is the fact that you will need the exhaust from the 96 as well or you will need to find a way to mount the THREE O2 sensors that OBDII system requires. One at each bank of cylinders and one down in the Y-pipe like your 93 already has. The ENTIRE engine wiring harness will be needed to obtain all of the additional wiring for the fuel injection and mass air sensor which will need to be installed as well.
This is not to say that it cannot be done but you are talking about swapping out such major things as the firewall electrical connectors (pin configurations are different and additional wires are run for fuel injectors and mass air sensor), exhaust components (previously mentioned), and the main computer itself. My hat is off to you if you are willing to attempt it. From a personal standpoint, I would try to find the setup from a 94 or older F-series or Bronco if only to save the headaches I mentioned.
In short, yes, it CAN be done and you will see some improvements in performance if only by virtue of the fact that you will be running the mass air injection setup. It seems like an awful lot of work in swapping out many components that don't really have anything wrong but must be swapped to make everything work. If you do decide to go ahead with it please keep us all posted. Its a challenge I would think twice about undertaking.
Does sound like a lot of work. I have the entire 96, my 93 has an upgraded exuast, headers were put on and i beleive it went from 2 cat's, too 1. so it a pain to pass smog, i'll have too look into the mass air flow. not exactly sure of the firewll pins your talking about. I do know that the dash wiring from 96 does fit the firewall connecor to engine. seem a bit similar, exept of course there a few more wires. and i beleive its the 4x4 computer (on passanger side kick pannel) has a different connector. i need to throw my dash back together, reinstall it in truck, and cross my fingers. it's very difficult trying to find a good match at junk yard. you mentioned f series. there was a 93, and 94 extended cab f 150. will this be a good match? unfortantely i think there 2 wheele drive though, and they dont have the back window option. i appreciate your help. this site is a great help.
The mass air system runs an additional SIX wires to the injectors and however many are needed to send and receive signal to/from the MAF sensor. The firewall connectors are probably the same size connector however there are additional contact pins in the 96 for the reasons stated above. I don't know if the actual configuration (location) of the pins in the connectors changed when the OBDII system was added in 96 but its likely that it did.
