i have a 72 f100 with a 72 302 in it the engine has been bored .040 over and rebuilt in the past. I have changed all gaskets, main bearings, cam bearings, rod bearings, pushrods, lifters, timing chain and gears, valve springs, retainers, locks, and seals. I am using a comp cams 268H cam with magnum roller rockers and 3/8" screw in rocker studs. I replaced the points with a crane cams electronic ignition unit and have the rev limiter set a 4000 rpm. Will my engine handle higher speeds or should I just leave it at that?
Thanks in advance
Stock rods? Stock rod bolts? New rod bolts, I hope? What kind of valve springs and did they come with any advise about max revs?
I used to run my 289 to 5500--box stock and way tired.
When I rebuilt one, I had valve springs good for 7000, but my cam and carb didn't warrant running it up that high. It saw 7000 on a missed shift and stayed together...even though I reused old rod bolts. (a big mistake)
Shelby used to say 7000 was max for his hi-po Cobra motors.
I saw an article about a guy running a 289 in a '65 Mustang drag car running it to 10,000.
So, if it still is making power, see how it sounds at 5000 and 5500. But it you cheaped out on rod bolts, stay at 4000 till you can swap them out for some ARP or other fine brand units.
i regularly run my box stock 84 crown vic 5.0L to 5000rpm, and sometimes more on a wot 1-2 shift...... held it to 6000 once. and it's still running fine
