ignition switch wiring question....

so i finally pulled the instrument panel out to trace the melted wire. Near as i can tell, it winds up in the ignition switch. Whats left of it is red w/ green stripe, and it goes in to the same pin as the fat red "resistor wire do not cut or splice" wire. What does this do? Is it for acceseries? It goes into the harness, accross the back side of the dash, and comes back out in the general vicinity of the cigarette lighter and hazard light switch. I thought it was a solid green color where it came out, but it was so melted it could have been any color.

The reason for my madness is that none of the gauges work. Everything else works fine.... lights, etc, (but no radio either). Any suggestions?

Thanks guys....

Not sure about that wire, before I tore my truck part looking I would check the fuse links out at the starter soliniod. The fuse links look like wires and will be conected to the battary side of the soliniod. If you see any that appear melted pull on it away from soliniod, if it stretches it's bad. Cut it out and splice in a new Fuseable link. you can buy at any parts store.
If thats not it post again I have a 1972 Ford truck manuel I look up your wiring
please give me as much info about your trucks equip as possable

I believe the red w/green stripe wire is your 12V switched power to everything that needs switched power, including the alternator. If it melted you better figure out why. I have copies of a 72 wiring diagram I'll send you if you want. Just email me your address.

i'm fairly certain it melted because the p.o. wired in some additional lights on the front and back.... that took way more power to run than that little wire could supply. It appears that even though it melted, it didnt short out any other wires in the harness, but i need to know where it went. it comes out of the harness as a lime green (i think!) wire and it was just hanging loose, and i cant see where it would have hooked to... would love to have the wiring diagram, will send my addy... wes- its a '70 F-250 CS, 360 auto.

Sorry bud, I dug out my Ford truck manuels I have 1970 vol 1 and 2, it's the wiring diagrams are in vol 3. I did look through them only has wiring for charging sys, and componant test. So no closer to finding out where the lime green wire goes.

For my 1971, The red with green stripe is circuit #16 off of the switch, which goes to #904 (green - red stripe) then a connector which goes to the Alt. The only other wire that I can see tied into that circuit is #932 (different diagram) is a blue wire that goes to the carb. solenoid (if you have one and/or A/C).

If the radio does not work, I think it is a separate circuit and issue.

The CD-ROM (what I have) that www.motorhaven.com sells comes with all the diagrams you could want or need to solve these problems. imo, well worth the money.

Rebo,
Thanks for the reminder. I bought a wiring manual for my 67 and completely forgot that the info is already in the CD! I'll check tonight.
