I have an '84 F-150 4X4 with the 300 six, T-18 tranny and the NP208 transfer case. I would like to pep this truck up a little. It now has a 1 barrel carb and a single 2 inch exhaust and I am running 33/12.50 tires. I know that breathing is a problem for this engine so should I up the exhaust size and the carb size? If so, what size carb and exhaust diameter. Also should I do duals with a split factory header with or without mufflers? I appreciate your help.
Not that I personally care but what state are you in before you start stripping things out like cat's? Do you have to pass emissions? Where engine breathing is concerned remember it's not the carb that makes the engine breathe it's airflow that you're after. Aftermarket exhaust is good for the downstream side, but you've also got to take into consideration your intake side. In other words your breather setup - it's got to be able to breathe in as well as out. If you're after more throttle response the first thing to do is go back to smaller tires. Some of those truck came out with 3.00 or 2.75 rears, if you've got one of those rears with 33's, and a 6, you're so high geared that truck will never get out of it's own way. Even with 3.08's you can't stand that much tire.
I live in TN and don't have any emissions test to deal with. The truck had 3.08 gears but I have changed them to 4.11 and plan on adding 35's when the 33's wear out. The truck has been converted over to the Duraspark II ignition and all the computer stuff has dissapeared including the cat. It now has the stock 1 barrel carb, 2inch exhaust and a $14 muffler. Remember that it has a 4sp with 1st being a granny gear. Thanks for any help.
