Cam Tensioners

How do you know if the cam tensioners on your engine need to be replaced? My truck has the slight "dieseling" noise coming from the engine but nothing real loud. It seems to have okay pick-up when I put the gas into but nothing neck snapping. I initially attrubuted this to the electronic thottle but now I am not sure. It definitely does not feel like a 4 banger in there but how does one know?

Cam Phaser

If you had the cam phaser issue you will hear a definate knocking or tapping sound coming from either the drivers side or passenger side. I had the problem on the passenger side and when you stuck your head in the front wheel well you could definately hear the knock.

I also have the slight diesel sound you are referring too, sounds almost like a loose chain I guess would be a way to describe it. As far as I know that is normal for these engines.
