Blasting with soda

Has anyone done any blasting with soda? I've used glass beads, silica sand and slag on various items and I know what results to expect from them. I'd like to get a real fine matte finish on some gun parts and wonder how soda would work. Along the same line, anyone ever use ground walnut hulls on anything? What have you used it on? How did you like it?

Used ground up walnut shells in the army to remove carbon from the turbine blades in the Lycoming Gas Turbine engines. Worked well.

I've seen an aluminum intake on ebay that was supposedly blasted with baking soda, and it had a nice satin finish(from the pictures). I've also used ground walnut shells with polishing rouge in a case tumbler on rifle cartridges which polish brass to a shine like new. My 2 cents

At work, we use soda in all our blasters. We use it to remove powdercoating after running it through a burn-off oven. It removes the burnt paint without really touching the metal (steel and alum).
