valve keepers

Is there an easy way to remove valve keepers? I have a good valve compresser, is there another tool needed to remove the keepers? The last time I saw it done, they would pick right out with a magnent. What am I doing wrong?

If you compress the valvespring straight down, far enough, you should be able to pull 'em out with your fingers. Kind of turn 'em a bit on the valve and they'll come right off. Just make sure the spring compressor doesn't slip while your fingers are in there!

Edit: The keeper retainer has a tendency to stick on the keepers. You might need a small piece of wood, and a hammer, to dislodge it.

What I use is a Mallet (a Dead blow) to smack the tops of the valve spring retainer's with a couple of times before using the spring compressor on them.. That usually breaks the keepers away from the Valve and they come off without any problem!!

Good Luck!!
