About 2 months ago, while driving down the road. I can hear a sound like a fuel pump could make in the cab of the truck. It would make noise for about 5-6 seconds and then go away. Few minutes later, it would do it again. This only happened for a week. Is it my fuel pump trying to tell me something? Or did I just get a bad tank of gas? Anyone heard of such a thing before?
Depending on the year model, you may have the canister type filter that is built into the fuel tank selector assy w/ dual tanks, or just a simple canister w/o dual tanks. These types were the '85 & '86-87 fullsize trucks w/ efi.The good thing about those years was the filter was before the high pressure frame pump, so it would stop trash from reaching the pump. But when it would get a little dirty, the fuel flow was less so the pump made more noice ' cause it was having to do more work. For the '88 and newer, the only fuel filter is the common inline one after the frame pump, which in this case, will allow trash to enter the frame pump.Fortunantly the pump is designed to handle such debris and will more then likely pass through whatever comes to it.This pump will make noises when the inline filter gets clogged also. Now here is a tip that many people don't think about, a fuel pump has a DC motor,so if you reverse the polarity, it will pump backwards(it will aslo un-stick a frozen pump).Doing this will usaully expel whatever trash is in the pump out of the port in came into. Also, every fuel pump has a steel mesh screen built into the inlet to catch LARGE particles, and when you backflush the pump, the screen will usually get cleared of the debris.

Paul W ,
I have a 90 F150 , single tank and pump . I have noticed my pump when its cold sounds like it is going to fly apart . During warmer days it has the steady hum . Ive heard other Ford fuel pumps sound the same . I think they are made by Walbro . They also make small carbs for weedeaters etc . Next time it makes some odd noises , see if its temperature related .

I believe that when I heard that noise, it has been cold weather. I'll watch for that. It has been awhile since I've changed my fuel filter. May'be I will change that shortly and see what happens next. From where the inline fuel filter is, where is the fuel pump? 1990 F-150 4x4, dual tanks. 351. Isn't there a high pressure pump in each tank and then another pump somewhere else?
