Well, due to my neglect, I now have a problem that I didnt think possible. Been a while since last oil change, however I think driving patterns helped in creating the problem.
I know have sludge buildup in my 99 Explorer. What is the best way to clean it out? I have read that 5 min engine flushes plug up ports and screens and cause other problems... the engine is still running fine. I am thinking of running deisel oil in it and changing the oil every month until the sludge is gone. that way not massive buildup of "stuff" can cause further damage.
Full synthetic oil does remove dyno varish build-up but sometime thats the only thing keeping old seals sealed so you end up springing leaks on older engines after a switch to synthetic.
Just curious, but what type of driving do you do? Mostly highway which is easy on the oil or lots of short trips where the engine never gets warmed up, which is hard on the oil? And how often have you been changing oil?
When I was driving 25 K miles a year -mostly highway- i was changing the SYNTHETIC oil in my Fords -based on oil analysis- every 12 K miles and never had any oil related problems.
Well, it appears that the sludge is only on the top of the engine.. due mainly to short driving trips I suppose... anyway, I added a quart of that engine treatment that begins with a b... guess it is like MMO and will change the oil every 500 miles or so until it is straightened out...
Luckily Castrol is on sale for 1.50 a quart locally....
