I think my h2o pump is starting to go. I've noticed a coolent smell, and have small drips starting under the truck. Any recomendations? just get oem or any aftermarket? How easy is it to do yourself? 93 f-150 4x4 302-v8
The water pump is fairly easy, remove the fan shroud, fan, then the water pump, scrap the old gasket off, put on new gasket and a little RTV to hold it in place and make a good seal, replace the water pump, fan, and shroud. An hour job if your good at it, 2-3 hours if you go slow and it's your first time.
Before you blame the water pump leaking, verify that is what's leaking. In a dark garage, armed with a decent light, crwal underneath and source out the leak. the water pump will leak from a hole that is near the pulley, visible from underneath. Another possibilty is the themostat bypass hose located on the themrstat housing, visible from above but tends to drip coolant on the timing cover and eventually finding it's way down, very tricky to spot! One more thing, find the drain pipe for the A/C evaperator below the A/C case, visible from underneath on the passenger side. If the end of the pipe shows signs of coolant, it's the heater core that is leaking!Good luck.
