I was looking at this last week. Looks like the vacuum line would need to be run thru the firewall to the line at the recirculating air vent diaphragm under the dash below thw glove box. I believe this vacuum line, on the OBS, is under the hood in the far left corner of the engine compartment (when facing the engine). I opted to go with the manual valve to eliminate the excess heat when using the vents after the engine has "heat soaked" after being driven and parked for awhile.

I used a manual valve as well. I'm going to install a cable like the old trucks had so I can control it myself (rather than having to turn the air on to be cool)

Agreed. The ONLY time I want hot water in the heater core is when I'm turning on the heat or the defroster.

I, too, am setting up a manual cable operation to the valve. I just haven't decided where to put it...

I have one from the Dieselsite and it is activated by selecting the Max AC and the valve diverts the coolant from the heater core.

Because I live in the SW I've thought about just putting in a mechanical ball valve under the hood and just keeping it closed. I don't need the coolant going through the heater core ever, except a few months a year.

Well I guess I will just keep it manual if the T into the vac line only closes the valve on max ac

Lots of us have done this conversion to our trucks. I picked up a electrically operated vacuum switch and a vacuum operated heater valve and added it to my truck. I didn't want to have to be opening the hood all of the time to turn a valve off or on. When I want heat, a quick flip of the switch and its there. It made the AC temp about 5 degrees cooler, and you can have cool outside air coming through the vents instead of 85 degree air on a 70 degree day.

I think it was from Vintageair. Give me a while to dig through my papers and I'll let you know for sure. It was a really easy mod.

Yup, it was Vintage Air Look on page 34 of the online catalog. Since you live reasonable close to me, you are welcome to take a look at how I have mine hooked up. I'm usually home Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Neil,

Do you have any pictures of your installation? And how about the part numbers? I can do pretty well installing things with a list of parts and maybe some instructions, but trying to figure out what parts someone would use out of a catalog full of possible parts, nope, not enough money for all the parts that I could incorrectly buy. thanks

The part number for the Vintage Air Vacuum switch is 11542-VUS. I don't have the part number at the moment for the heater valve, but they are available at AutoZone and Kragen, NAPA etc. I purchased the one that allows the coolant to flow when the vacuum is applied (switch in the cab turned on). It is just a simple in-out valve. I'll try to find the part number for the valve when I get off work tomorrow.

Those two items, some 14 ga. wire, a few wire connectors, a couple of feet of vacuum line, a vacuum "T" and a couple of hose clamps and you are done.

I do have a few pictures that I got from another fella when I did my install. I can send them to you if you'd like.

Neil,

That would be great. Summertime is coming up fast and It would be nice to have colder AC in the Cab.

As you can see, I didn't get the part number posted for you this evening. I wrote myself a note to get it first thing in the morning for you. If you send me your email address, I'll forward the photos to you. You can send it via private message if you don't want the whole world to see your address.
