For any other poor Ford truck owners that live in Taxachusetts, is there a waiver clause in the new inspection rules? I have an 85 F150 4x4 351HO that has a snowball's chance in hell of passing the test. The manifolds leak, the choke doesn't work on the carb, I don't think the cats work anymore, my series 40 Flowmaster is DEFINITELY louder than stock, and my 33" General Grabber MT's stick about 2" past the body. As Murphy's law predicted, I missed the emissions exemption by one year, anything before 84 is exempt. My question is, is there some kind of dollar amount you have to spend to try and correct an emissions problem before you get a waiver, if such a thing is even possibe? I'm waiting to buy a new carb until I find this out or not, that way I'll just fail, replace the carb, buy a cheap set of headers, and hopefully get a waiver if it still doesn't pass. Thanks.
Can't help you with the 'chusetts law but in Tn. you have to spend $200 and it's only a one time excemption. I've been there, done that, and got a very expensive T-shirt. Sounds like you have a more extensive inspection than we do. Ours is just an emissions test only. I can give you something to try. I drive an '87 six banger with EFI. To pass this year I spent another $200 and finally got it passed when I ran the back tank dry and put in 2.25 gal. of gas and 32oz. of rubbing alcohol. Drove the truck about 12mi to get it at operating temp. and switched over to the bank tank for the drive back. Passed with flying colors. Can't wait till August. Let us know what happens. David
