Tow Command System

I have a 2005 F250 SD with the integrated brake system (Tow Command). I tow a 35' 5th wheel and recently connected the trailer to the truck for the first time. I have the brake system maxed out at 10 but when I hold the actuator lever it doesn’t hold the trailer. Is this normal?

Yes, this is a common complaint. You can find many references to it if you search the trailer towing forum. I think there is some sort of work around you can do with a momentary-on toggle.

I also have a 2005 with the brake controller. Now could it be that it is not holding because of the anti lock brake system.

It is controlled by the PCM and it senses speed and brake presure to control the trailer brakes. I know what you mean and the old style controlers you could lock up the trailer brakes by pressing the manual lever on the control.

Here you go directly from Ford, depending on when your truck was mfg'd will determine how much voltage is output while being still.

I do wonder if there is some sort of upgrade that can be done. Would be nice to have full output power.

2005 F-Series Super Duty Factory Trailer Brake Controller Tips:
The Towcommand integrated trailer brake controller can only be installed on a vehicle that was not originally equiped with this option if a brake pressure transducer-equiped master cylinder is installed, and the instrument cluster is reconfigure to recognize towcommand system. Broadcast Message 3938.
Diagnosis procedures for the Towcommand system is in the workshop manual, section 206-10, Auxiliary Brake System. All voltage tests sould be made with the controller at the maximum gain setting of 10.0. Brake controller output voltage increases with vehicle speed. In park with brakes fully applied the output voltage on trucks built before 3-23-05 should be greater than 1-3 volts; after 3-23-05 greater than 10-12 volts. Full voltage is only available above 15 MPH. The Towcommand system works in both forward and reverse. Broadcast Message 3286.
When installing an aftermarket controller on trucks equiped with a factory installed controller, the factory one must be left intact and the aftermarket controller installed separately. Broadcast Message 3332, 4080.
The Towcommand system is ment to only work with electric trailer brakes and not surge or electric over hydraulic brake systems. Broadcast Message 3179.
