More of a stutter. Watching the engine, it doesn't make it shake that much, but if the passenger seat is empty, I can see the seatback shake back and forth a couple of inches, seems like the resonance travels best through the transmission mount. The tach twitches a bit, I can feel and hear it in the cabin, and I can really hear it standing at the back and listening at the exhaust, I have Borla dual cat-back, so the exhaust at idle is louder than stock.
I think I would have to take it in for a drivability test ASAP, just to be safe. You never know, you might have a plug that worked loose and has worn a hole in the COP boot. It only takes a few minutes for the tech to discover the problem...if he's good at it.
I had the same problem with my 97 F150 5.4 liter. Would sure like to meet the engineer who designed that engine. 4 of the plugs are behind the dash line. I washed my truck engine the first week I had it and the exact same thing happend to me.
With the engine idleing, pull the connection wires from each COP one buy one. If no difference when you pull the connector, then thats's the one that's bad. You should have a noticeable miss when you pull the connector off.
Bigboom,a word of caution about doing that, the pcm is a computer that doesn't take kindly to disconnect of wires from it while running. It can go boom!
no pun intended.I personnaly wouldn't tell someone to do that when the pcm cost over $500 to replace.Better to spend the 500 on the scan tool to chk misfires
don't you think?

I wet my engine last week and the thing started to miss. I went out and bought 2 cops and tried to find the bad one, to no avail. Today, I went to visit my neighborhood Firestone dealer and the kind gentlemen advised me to check the cops boot at the plug and check to see if they have the shape of the spark plug. I had also changed plugs, tp o avail. Please pass this on to 5.4 owners:
Change the boots every time you tune up your truck or it will miss. I finally fixed my problem just by doing that.
bigoom, if you don't mind, did you buy your plug boots at the dealer and how much were they???? Thanks, glmf
The factory boots are made of some junky material (like the 90 degree ell that attaches to the throttle body and runs to the PCV valve for example along with other vac hoses, etc). If they get wet or even moist due to condensation they will begin to crack.
The boots alone are about $7 at the local Ford place, but I think now you can buy the aftermarket COP with the boot for about $70.00 at any parts house.
Bigoom,
Was the $43.80 for the COP and boot? If it was that's a real good price.
Big Orn, the price is for the boots (8) and you also get new springs with them. I purchased the COP for $43 plus tax at Oreilly's and they come with the boot and all.
Thats a good price for the boots. It would be nice if they put a non counductive lining in the cylinder head where the COP's go in. Would solve a lot of headaches. BTW when i wash my motor and hose it off I leave it running for about a half hour with the hood closed to dry everything up. Just try to keep the hose away from the COP's and you should be ok.
Well I have a very similar problem with my new 04 5.4 SD. IF i'm towing my camper, or have some weight in it it appears to shutter. This is more noticable with the cruise on. I have had it to the dealer 2 different times. The first time it quit on the highway. a new computer and 4 new injectors later it ran fine until last week. First repair was at 14 miles....now I have 16,500 on it. I took it to the dealer yesterday and they said nothing is showing up. He suggested i shouldn't use the cruise while towing or haveing weight on it. Does this sound kosher to you guys ? I have towed my camper to Virginia and back with no problems...isn't this why I bought the SD.
Well you shouldn't use cruise when towing, if and this a big if the transmission is hunting alot for the correct gear to be in.reason heat is being generated within the tranny (tranny failure)
Now for your problem
I would ask that you start a new thread (post )
if you can make your vehicle do this with the trailer attached take it to the dealer with it attached and take the tech for a ride
They can put the wds on and drive around and try and capture the problem .
You can ask them to do a scan chk for misfires and ask for a printout of it.
Just my opinion
