I have a 1981 F-150, 300/6cyl, with a 3spd w/OD.
It keeps jumping out of 2nd and 3rd gear everytime I let my foot off the thottle. I have a 1986 F-150 for parts(body is shot) and i was wondering if the two trannys were the same and if i could just swap them over. I don't know any particulars on either transmission, but any info would be appreciated.
Thanx
Aaron,
As long as the bolt patterns on both patterns are the same , they will bolt up . What you may run into is the Clutch / Hydralic system is different for those two transmissions . Maybe you can trade the 96 tranny for an older one or some deal like that ?

As far as I know, the bellhousing bolt pattern is the same with a 300 I6, 302, & 351W. If that is the original trans in the 86 it will probably work as I don't think the factory put a 460 in a F-150 that year.

Sounds like your shift forks are wore out, my truck has a similar problem(it won't engage 3rd) the swap should be pretty straightforward, just make sure you check the legnth of the driveshaft, and if the other truck has a regular 4 speed, it may have a larger input shaft, requiring a clutch change(I haven't had mine out, but I'd check just in case.)
