a front load waher and drier set, Maytag, Whirlpool(or the Kenmore version) a little pricey but worth the price in the way they clean and energy savings.
Kenmore HE 3t front loader. Uses less than half the water, detergents, softners. Noticed an immediate drop in electric bill, we're all electric with well. Will wash three times as much clothes in one load.
Our Sears Kenmore finally stop working after 37 years of great service.
Don't expect to achieve anywhere near that longevity out of your next one. You know the old saying about that they don't make em' like they used to. I had an old Kenmore washer that was around 25 or 26 years old that was doing about 15 loads a week untill the transmission went out. I got a Maytag that only lasted about 5 years and died. Now I have another Kenmore.
I have a Miele front loader, it cops a lot of abuse at least 2 loads a day of dust, dried cow manure, grease covered clothes, and still manages to make them really clean, even after 12 years...
Tried to move it one day, the thing must weigh a good 400lbs!
Whirlpool Duet front loader. I saw a drastic drop in the water bill after I got the washer. It also spins more water out of the clothes so they don't take as long to dry.
I'll second Whirlpool, they are the most reliable of the major brands in my opinion. My old one went 12 yrs and it was still working, I just wanter a biggger one. As for front vs top. I thought long and hard about it and went with top. I could not justify the 1200+ price and the advice I got from 2 appliance repairmen (who had no interest in what I bought) was that front loaders were more trouble prone. I got a top of the line TL for 1/3 the price of a similar FL, water is cheap here.
If you have septic capacity issues, I could see a FL being the way to go.
my hot point runs just like it did the first day I got it 7 years ago last april. I had a matchng dryer but it developed a squeek last winter. it would still dry well but the squeek was too much and I replaced it with a Whirlpool.
Last time I checked Roper was rated the best by Consumer Reports for low repair rates and customer satisfaction. I believe they are the leader for laundry store installs too.
I've been really happy with my Maytag Neptune. Front load. It's never given me any problems.
Same here but it's only 4 years old. The guys at the local independent appliance repair shop said that Maytag Neptunes were having some issues with the pump motor, but when I told 'em I had the manual button (not touch screen) model they said that was better.
I'd call as many appliance repair guys and ask what they see most often.
Maytag Top-Loader, commercial, biggest size you can buy without the electronic switches on it (that's what'll fail first). Had ours three years with three kids and more loads than you can count- never hiccuped. Ditto the matching dryer.
I'll agree to the front load washer machines. Some numbers for you. Most newer top load machines (non-energy star models older machines used up to 50) use about 40-44 gallons of water per load and are done in 25 minutes. Base model e-star top loads use 30-36 gallons per wash. Agitatorless top load models use around 15-22 gallons per wash. And front load washers use from 6 gallons (BOSCH) to an average of 15-22 gallons per wash. About the only disadvantage is the wash times become 45-70 minutes per load. Some do hold more. The spin cycle is generally over 900rpm and the force with in the drum exceeds 300G and that equals a shorter drying time where much energy is burned. Oh and the soap consumed is less from 1/4 to 1/2 a cup of regular soap to using a full cup of the HE DETERGENT. You use less water, detergent, electricity/gas, and the washer is gentler on your close, plus they come out cleaner. Here in MA they can litterally pay for themselves in as littles as three years. Well worth the investment unless you only do 2 loads a week you will never see a return. Ever wonder why most laundromats use front loaders?
Just my $0.02
I bought the Elite (check post # 3 by affrmidnght) machine for Michelle .she just loves it.
When the dryer breaks down, we will get the dryer mate for the washer.
