key is off engine is turning over please help
1985 f250 351w I just installed a jasper engine with edelbrock performer carb and intake. went to fire it up and battery was low when I turned key off the starter kept cranking the engine until battery was fully discharged i have never seen this happen before any help ould be appreciated

check the hookup of your starter solenoid. Thats probably where the problem is. Dont let your starter crank for more than about 20 seconds without giving it time to cool off. Will ruin a starter fast.

Have you figured this out yet. It is probably your solenoid. I have had a couple go bad this way, the internal contacts solder themselves together and don't release. By a new solenoid and make sure all wiring is correct. If the large cables from battery and to starter are backwards is will cause this problem. I had this happen on my 86, I bought a new solenoid(the universal type, it is small and round, not tall like the original.) And when I screwed it to the firewall in the same orientation as the old solenoid it was actually backwards so I had to buy a new one and install it upside down for the cables to reach the proper terminals.

Also, it isn't uncommon for the solenoid to fail, and remain contacted when cranking the engine with a low battery. With the reduced voltage, the contacts heat up, due to higher draw, and then weld together. If it isn't the solenoid, then you have a bad ignition switch, which can happen as well, but not as likely due to the conditions, just due to age and wear.
