Maybe I am the dipstick here, you will have to let me know.
I changed the oil on my 99 F250 CC 2WD SB yesterday. I put in motorcraft 5-30w and a motorcraft filter as recommended by you fine guys on this forum. This is the first time I have changed the oil in anything except a lawn mower but I followed my haynes manual to the letter and everything went fine.
I put 4 qrts in then checked the dipstick. It seemed a little low so I added another quarter of a quart. Then I fired her up and checked for leaks. nothing.
The problem that I am having is reading the dipstick. I think that as I pull it out it leaves a trail of oil on the dipstick so that half of the width of the stick is covered in oil up past the max level but not all of the width is covered until below the min line. Just to be clear, I have added 4 1/2 quarts of oil (my haynes says add 4 quarts) and the dipstick is completely covered in oil just below the words min and has a streak of oil through the "OK" area and just past the max.
Put another quart in. I used to put in 6 qts (which put the level a little above the full mark) when I changed the oil and filter in my old SD '99 V-10.
Pay no attention to that trace of oil on half the stick extending up above the full mark. That is just splash in the oil level tube.. The true oil level will plainly cover the entire width of the stick ,turn it over and the oil fluid line on the stick will be a ring completely around the entire stick. Use a flash lite. I just plain don't think you got enough oil in that thing!
What wacky Haynes manual are you using? Sheesh that sucker is waaay off! Like 4wd said, 6 quarts minimum!
On my dipstick, the oil readings are almost as you describe reevesg. On mine, oil will mark 1/2 of the stick, along the length of it, to the oil level. Kinda like this:
__
oo
oo
|oo| <---Oil Level
oooo
oooo
oooo
Munkey,
Mine is the same way. Upon putting the 6 qts in, oil only shows up half way between the marked area. I brought this topic up a few months ago on here. The answer--Fill up with recommended 6 qts and let her go. You DON"T want to overfill.
Put 6.5 qts.in it when you change the oil and the filter and it'll be right on the top of the full mark.Do it,and be done with it.
Please excuse my cynicism,but.....it aint rocket science.
I don't know, Gareth, but they're wrrrrong!
6 quarts here - no more - no less. What would I use that half-quart on anyway, since my engine refuses to use oil?

Well, funny you should ask. When I used to fill with 6.5 qts, I would stick the (is it half empty or half full ? What the hell does that mean anyway?) half a bottle into a fairly tight place under the hood. That way when I got 2K-ish miles on it (this was when I ran Mobil 1 and got lots of evaporation, I use Motocraft now) I could add a half quart. Now I use just 6, and stash a full bottle in it's place. I'm one of those guys who may be just a little bit **** retentive, so driving anywhere with just a half quart low would send me right to the shrink. So for peace of mind, I keep a quart with me, and bearing grease, and an airfilter, and an oil filter, and a quart of tranny fluid, and a spare light bulb (for every light, yea, uh huh), and an extra jack and jack stand, OK, OK, enough, y'all have a good one ya hear ?
And I did consider going out and getting an extra quart because around these sticks, not many mom-n-pop gas stations carry GTX 5w-30...
But, with almost 100K and no sign - yet - of oil use, I just can't seem to get one of those little round tuits.
btw, half-full/half-empty is a phrase used by psycho gangbangers during their usual drive-by shooting and bar-b-que outings - referring to either bullets or beer or both...which was started by Sigmund Freud as a science:

It is a mistake to believe that a science consists in nothing but conclusively proved propositions, and it is unjust to demand that it should.
When i fill up with 6 qts it usually ends up a little above add mark. I wonder why in this day and age they cant get a simple dip stick to read correctly in the same engine. As a rule I usually dont check my oil level after fill up because I add the 6 qts and that is what it takes, so why check, but I thought I was using oil so the last oil change I checked it and found out it is reading low to begin with. So I guess I am not using any oil, Thats a good thing, But I stll cant get over the different readings with the same engine.
