Hello, I am the guy who bought the 79 F150 that we think may well be an Indy Pace truck. Here is the data plate info...
VIN=F15JLEG9396
WB=133
COLOR=O (OR 0)
TYPE/GVW=F150
BODY=PA4
TRANS=K
AXLE=16K
GVW=6050
1979
DSO=46
Mine has all of the obvious interior appointments of an Indy truck plus the "O" paint code plus on top of all that it does have the DSO of Indianapolis, although I'm not sure that in and of itself makes it any more likely to be an Indy Pace truck...Sure wish I could fogure this out. It does have a pushbar on the front and looks like it at one time had some kind of roll/nerf bar mounted in the front of the bed.

The DSO is correct - it was delivered to Indianapolis
The Engine is right 460
The interior codes don't sound right
P = Youth Package = Vinyl only
A = Black
Black/silver/orange is correct
4 = Styleside (correct)
Exterior code is wrong.
Should be black/silver
Try and find the buck tag on the firewall (top-center)
plus the one attached to the undercarriage > box/frame
It should have the trim codes on it.
I now have to suggest contacting Ford themselves.
There is a thread in this forum called *Build sheet*
Search for it & you will get the phone number to request a copy of the details of that truck .
Well,other than my truck having been painted red at some point it is the same as 79Indy's truck in that it has the exact same interior. Same black/silver with red or orange piping on seat, same dash inserts, same steering wheel, same color floor mat and interior color. Mine is a 460 and yours is a 302. Someone said the correct engine is a 460, although I have seen some supposedly original pace trucks with everything from a 302 to a 460 and 351 or 400's too. Mine also is a Ranger. Could you get any trim level as well?? Mine has 3.50 gears, intermittent wipers, dual tanks, a/c, etc...I might also mention it has a very nice interior, other than the driver side of the seat having some wear. It has near perfect door panels in silver/black/red. I hate to say it but I have too many projects already so it will likely be sold to someone who can do it justice. I would hate to part it out, but may. I did drive all the way north of Indianapolis from TX just to save it, so it would be a shame but it does have lots of excellent rare parts. It is very original other than the paint. Underhood has never been touched. I will try to contact Ford to get info on it. Thanks, for info from everyone..Please keep it coming.
EDIT:
Was the exterior coded for black/silver?? Or was the black part decal?? Danny
There was also a trim package called the free-wheeling package that also included the same black/silver/orange trim.
About the striping.
The trim codes will be on a buck tag & the original build sheet.
The build sheet can be found under the carpet on either side or
tucked into the springs under the seat.
Thanks, Dennis. I knew of the Free Wheeling pkg. Some photos I see of Indy trucks have front push bars just like this truck has and some don't. Also, I see some Indy trucks with the roll bar in the bed and some without. This truck at one time had one of those in the bed as well. Was that some kind of option on trucks other that Indy's? I already emailed "Kate" at Ford. We'll see if "she" answers me. I did peek underneath the seat this morning and saw no build sheet. I havn't looked underneath the mat. I will look for the body buck tags tomorrow and post the info. Thanks, Danny
the pace trucks were available with either the 302 the 351 or the 460 you also got your choice of 2 or 4 wheel drive the only thing I know for sure is they all were silver with the black and orange stripes and the "OFFICAL TRUCK" decals could be put on at the dealer or you could take them home
They were also, I'm sure, available with a 400, possibly even a 6 cylinder. I think they were also available with any trim level from Custom to Lariat.
I did end up getting Ford to verify I have a real Indy Promotion Truck. Mine was built on March 9, 1979 for use in Indianapolis the month of the race. I may sell the truck to somebody who wants to restore it...Anybody interested?? I have a letter from Ford documenting the truck. Danny
Nitro - I've thought about selling mine for somebody to restore, too. Besides the sentimental reasons(I helped my Grandfather pick it out new), I can't seem to part with it because it's such a good truck regardless of the Indy package.
im a little envious ,those trucks are really cool. they were made back when most people were more into collector cars than trucks,ford was smart,they must have known they would be worth more an more as time went on.-billy
