Clutch Squeak

1993 F150 6 cyl, 5 speed.

About two months ago my clutch/tansmission started squeaking when I let the clutch out in first gear. The faster I go, the faster the squeak. The noise would stop when I pressed the pedal back in. Now a few months later is seems to be a bit louder and happening in 2nd as well.

Any suggestions on where to start? I don't mind dropping the transmission, but I want to make sure that it is the correct part.

Thanks,

Paul

I had an 82 F150 with a real nasty flywheel squeal. My 92 has a squeaky bushing inside the cab in the pedal assembly where it attaches to the clutch master cylinder. I've found that relates more to how I pull my foot from the floor, not which gear I'm in.

Not sure if this will help you any, but with no other replies to your post I figured I'd throw those ideas at you.

I don't think it's the pedal. The noise is definately coming from the outside of the truck. I ended up checking the cluch last night throught the inspection hole and there is about 3/16" of material there, so I don't think it's the pad.

The flywheel could be out of round, or have some warpage. The throwout bearing could be worn past "acceptable" yet still work (for a while anyway). As you change the load on the input shaft, it moves left and right in most manual transmissions. It moves very, very little, but it still moves. This can eventually over time wear out the bronze bushing in the crank flange. And that's why it's made of bronze usually - to be sacrificial rather than damage the input shaft. Could also be input shaft bearings starting to go... etc.

It really depends on the squeek and what it sounds like... I can only offer guesses since I can't hear it for myself.

I have had my fair share of problems with clutches on that motor tranny combo. One of them was a squeaking noise that was only apparent wen the clutch pedal was not disengaged. It was a faulty throwout bearing. It was replaced by a stock one from advanced auto parts. A week later, I downshifted into second going 25, (second goes 55 so i wasnt pushing it) the clutch pedal kinda kicked my foot off as i released, thought that was weird, pushed the pedal down, and the clutch pedal stayed on the floor, well thats not good....I made my slave cylender explode, thats the best way I can describe it, it was a terrible mess, melted plastic spring guide off the throwout bearing, broken and bent snap ring, general carnage. It was fun, bought a federal mogul throwout bearing, and a new clutch kit (because it damaged the pressure plate splines) from autozone, 3K miles since then, no issues. Moral of the story, Change it now before something else blows up...

another thought - check universal joints since you say it keeps going now. Get under it and grab each u joint and shake as hard as you can looking for any play between joint and drive shaft. Try putting it in neutral while moving and let the clutch out to see if the squeak is still there after the clutch is released. Good luck.
