Arrow Ranger Auto Tranny question

I have a 2000 Ranger with the 5 spd auto tranny (behind a 4.0L V6). I have a problem. When I manually downshift to 1st gear, I cannot get any engine braking. The tranny disconnects itself from the engine and the truck coasts. When the tranny is downshifted to 2nd, I get engine braking. My thinking is that some dufus at Ford decided that they would try and protect the engine from over-revving and not allow the 1st gear engine braking. Instead, you have to put it in 2nd and start riding the brakes. The truck has done this since it was new.

Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know of a work around for this?

Might be a worn 1st gear synchro.

There are no synchros in an automatic transmission.

I think I remember something about a valve body gasket problem causing this, but it's been awhile.

My error, I read right over that and saw a manual. Coast clutch is the next thing to look into but that should affect the 2nd gear compression braking also. Yes it could be a valve body problem.
