My 390 had a fuel pump that went bad.....it had a little "canister" sort of thing at the bottom....looks almost like an unscrewable filter.....when I went to the salvage yard for a replacement, they sold me one without this cannister.....just has two little towers with a pipe coming out of each.....when I bought a new replacement pump at the parts store, again, it had the canister.....is one better than the other? What is the "canister" for?
The canister houses a filter and it will come off. I've asked the same question and the benefit of having the canister is the added filtering capacity versus the newer version that is strictly a pump.
The canister does come off. And it's full of gas when it does, so be careful with it when removing and be sure to fill it back up with gas when reinstalling.
I took mine off by hand. It just has a rubber gasket as a seal just like an oil filter. They can be a bear to get off sometimes. You can get a strap type filter remover. That might help. But the filter is in there. And if you have a rusty gas tank the filter housing will be full of rust powder that looks like red mud.
I bought a new fuel pump and the housing was on so tight that the parts guy had to take it to the back room and put it in a vise to remove it! I wanted to make sure teh filter was in there and installed correctly before I left the store.
I use channel locks to get mine off with a rag wrapped around the jaws. When installing the new filter, smear the rubber grommet with grease so the filter goes over the fitting when you push it on. I put antiseize on the cannister threads too.
They're all supposed to come off but some are either on too tight or seized. I had the same problem as rebocardo. When I bought a new fuel pump I wanted to make sure the filter was in there but couldn't get it off. Tried it in a vise and one of them strap wrenches. Took it back to Autozone and the guy put it in a vise and still no luck. So I returned it and got another. Came off by hand. Removing one shouldn't be any different than removing an oil filter. They shoul come off easily so if yours don't they get another one.
I've been thinking of putting in one as a secondary pump on it's own circuit, so if i losse the mechanical one, i can flip two valves and a switch....I think you have to add a pressure regulator whith the electric pumps...
