Help me remove my calipers...please..

So, I checked the technical info sheets, and my Haynes manual and im still having a bit of a problem. 2000 Mazda b4000, 4x4, 4.0

Parked / blocked / raised the truck.
Removed the wheel.
Removed the lower caliper bolt.

Now what? I cant get the caliper unit to budge. Wiggled, swore, tapped it with a hammer to see I it would break free, no luck.

The Haynes book suggests a large (LARGE) c-clamp pressing from the outside of the rotor to the inside of the caliper case that covers the piston, and by tightening it should somehow free up a bit of space to pull the caliper off. Has anyone tried this because Im not sure how this will work?

Also, I have differing opinions on whether to remove some of the brake fluid or not. Anybody have advice on this?
How hard is it to change the rotors at the same time? They're borderline.

SHould be back at it this afternoon - with your help.

Thanks all.

Philip.

Well I thought of that but as far as I know the caliper pivots/swings up off the front bolt. Im not sure the top bolt removes the same way but Ill look into it. ANy other suggestions?

loosen the bleeder and pry it open cafeful not to screw the rotor up. Then tighten the bleeder this will hold it open and reduce the amount of air getting in the line. I'm with the last post there is always 2 bolts or pins on the 1's I.ve done.

I wish I had the book with me, but I think the caliper pivots and slide inward to remove off the top "pin". i dont think the top one is a bolt.

Anyway, I can get it that far even, wont budge - and the rotor wont turn for that matter (but I think it budged a bit then locked when I took off the wheel).

Thanks everyone - keep em coming.

When I did my 2000 I just pulled both bolts and worked the caliper off, sounds like your stuck on the ridge on the outer edge of the rotor. I never tried that method but it sounds reasonable since it would push the pistons into the caliper.

The lesson here: Don't beleive everything you read!

There was indeed 2 caliper bolts. My Haynes manual only shows one (as do the instruction in the tech sheets of FTE) AND i looked for it during Attempt 1 and somehow missed it (probably because it was right in front of me).

Anyways, once the second bolt was out the whole process was quick and easy. the calipers lifted off with some wiggling, swap pads and stick it back together.

Thanks for all your help. Gotta do the rotors on the weekend (out of stock).
