What about the rear axle? Same drain and fill as the trasnfer case?[/QUOTE
Mine doesn't have a drain plug. Had to remove the cover.
Yes and when I did my older trucks the first thing they got was a hole in the bottom of the cover and then I welded a nut to the inside. Instant drain plug!
My current truck has a built in drain plug so I didn't have to do that, but I would have if it were the case.
Two or three if I remember right. Just drain and fill. The plugs are on the back side of the case. Remove the fill plug first so you know that you will be able to fill it up once drained. Once drained simply refill to the level of the plug.
Kwik, where exactly is the drain plug on the xfer case? I see a few different ones. I'm guessing it is the big hex (driver's side, rear) at the lowest point that is on the area of the case that sticks out about an inch. If that's the one, man, it looks FROZEN!
Do the normal places, ie wal-mart, carry the Redline?
Also, can the fluid that goes into the tranny work for the tfer case and rear axle too?
No, the front axle is SAE 90 Hypoid gear oil and a rear 10.5 inch axle is SAE 75W-140. A DANA 80 uses 75W-90. Ford used synthetic for these two.
As for one of those shops doing it for you, well, yes, but results may differ. Some places you may have to read the labels yourself to make sure they put the right stuff in.
I'm such a moron! I went and look under my truck and just now realized that there is a front axle in additional to the rear axle and the transfer case. I thought there was only the transfer case in the front and the rear axle. I'm such a dufus.....
I callled a local FORD Stealer and they quoted me $450 service and fluids to do the tranny, transfer case, and rear axle. Is this an okay price or too much?

Not to be too sarcastic, are they going to kiss you too? $450 for a fluid change (assuming it includes a Transmission flush) is way too expensive. Then again, I may just be a cheap @#%#. You could do it yourself and save a $150 (assuming you go with Synth all the way around, more if you go with dino).

I read in the book that you didn't need to change the rear end dope on a 2002.
Did you do the change because you had a problem or just for maintenance?

A picture is worth a thousand words. The yellow stuff on the plugs is fuel rated thread tape. You can get it a Lowes hardware for real cheap.
I don't know if Wal-Mart carries Redline, I always buy it by the case from World Pac for the shop.
I purchased my PSD when it had 99k miles on it. I have no idea what the maintenance record on this truck was.
Other than a tranny flush, should the transfer case and front axle get flushed too? There was a post earlier mentioning that you should not need to change the rear axle fluid unless something is wrong.

Looks like it's time for another "Kwik's showroom new" picture.
Personally, I'd do the xfer case just for peace of mind.
Someone else who knows can answer about the front axle.
Great pic Kwik, thank you!
I'll get the tape too.

The transfer case IS NOT an option (mine gets real dark between changes). It is a standard (by mileage) fluid change just like the oil, transmission, etc. The differentials (2 of them on my 4 wheel drive) don't need to be changed or checked (according to the manual) unless you have a leak or submerge them in water. Yes, someday I'll change them just because I think every type of oil will lose it's efficiency over time. For limited slip, you must add a friction modifier to the rear end.

OKay...I just went out this morning and purchased 24 quarts (2 cases) of Mercon ATF from NAPA. Plus, I got fluids for the front axle....
So do I have to remove the front axle cover plate to drain the fluid? What a pain.
Plus, do I really need the thread tape for the transfer case? I forgot to get some....

Let me make a suggestion...
Notice in Kwik's post and pic above, he uses the tape.
If he uses it, I would too.
I'm not sure I'd mess with the front axle, use the manual's recommendations.
Transfer case, yes.
Wow! I think I've just done my first ever transfer case fluid change.
I added a little more than 2 quarts until fluids started to come out of the fill hole (top).
I hope it's the correct amount.
