Axle code question.

I have a 1988 Ford F250 4WD with 5.8L engine and C6 transmission. It has axle code H92 and Trans code K. I need to know the gear ratio for the rear axle so that I can replace the ring and pinion gears. The VIN is 1FTEX14H0JKA28796 if it will help out. If anyone could tell me the ratio or send me to a site that can decode VIN's for this year it would be a big help. Thanks in advance.

Axle code question.

the trans code K in the older trucks was a C-6 three speed auto, which your's being an 88 with the 351W it probably has the C-6. My book doesn't go new enough to decipher your axle ratio. Have you looked on the differential cover's to see if they still have the metal ID tag under one of the bolts. This will have the axle ratio on it as well as the Ford part # for the rear end. Find the tags and wire brush them off. there might be a 3.55 or 4.10 or something like that on it, this will be your axle ratio. As well as a longer number with letters starting it off which is the part # .

Axle code question.

Ford's 1991 Specification Book sez:
The only axle ratios available that year in F-250 (Light or Heavy Duty) were 3.55 or 4.10, limited slip available on either.
H92:
H9=3800 lbs. capacity, 3.55 ratio, open
2="Front Axle Limited Slip"
That last doesn't make sense. My '91 F-150 has the factory LS, and its axle code reads "H9N" which means yours should read H9N2--why would it have a front LS and leave the rear open?
I'm so confused. I think I'll go have a beer.

Axle code question.

rsbeadle,
Pop the cover off of the rear diff and rotate the axles until the stamped ratio on the outer edge of the ring gear rotates into view. Your rear axle should be a Full Floating Sterling 10.25, and there will be a stamp on the Ring gear verifying the ratio. Other than through seriouse neglect,I have never seen one of these axles or diffs fail. It is a very sturdy axle assembly.Later,
Jeff

Axle code question.

My 1989 owners manual shows H9 as a 3.55 with limited slip.
