Non turbo with a straight pipe is pretty loud. At idle, it just has a slight rumble. But under load and decelerating from higher engine speeds, its pretty obnoxious. Jason
Its loud on decel? I have only had one that made any noise to speak of in comparison to a gasser on decel and that was because the pump was kinda screwed up and dumped a bit more fuel in at idle then it should have.
Speaking from my experience (I have a 93 F250 non-turbo 7.3) I went from stock to single straight pipe 3". It was loud, and I love loud trucks, but this was a little to loud, especially with a load (camper, wood, ext). Going up hills it was way too barky for me. I put a Flowmaster 50 on. It made it too quiet. As for power, not a real difference in power. I saved up my coin and bought some headers and put dual 3" from the headers back with Flowmaster 40's. The best thing I have ever done. It rumbles awesome and is really throaty when you stomp on it and the power increase is very noticable, even my buddies riding in the passenger seat notice the power increase. And MPG went up. There, that is my life story with this truck. I love driving it. Enjoy.
Speaking of loud, A buddy and i were at a light next to a International 4700 with dual 2.5" into 4" stacks. He took off from the lights and got to about 2000 Rpm and I pertty much went def. At the next light he commented on buddy's truck, said it sounded good, I then found out he had dual glasspacks. I guess they suited the paint job though, White w/blue racing stripes.
I made my own muffler, has as much flow as a 5" exhaust, and not as much noise as a straight pipe. It is still throaty when I get on it, but reasonable at idle and cruise. Haven't ever put a decidel meter against it, but I would guess it to be legal. if a truck is turbo'd, the turbo takes some of the noise out vs. a non turbo straight pipe. Mack used to call the turbo their muffler, hence the origin of muffler bearings... a real part on a Mack truck.
