Pulled my 95 F350 Powerstroke off the driveway and in the the street this morning and parked it next to the curb. Everything was fine. Left for a few hours and when I came back I went to move it back in to the driveway. The shifter will not budge out of park. I have pressed on the brakes, pumped the brakes, jiggled the key.......... nothing. I need to get this thing moved. Any suggestions on how to bypass the brake pedal safety?
Is one of the tires up on the curb or something to keep the tranny in a bind? But then again I guess it's all electronic. You can turn the key on and move the steering wheel? That's crazy, sorry not more help.

Tires are all on the flat and steering wheel turns freely. I just now disconnected the shift cable, started truck, put on e-brake, crawled under truck, shifted manually, released e-brake and put it back in the driveway, shut off and reset e-brake and crawked back under and put back in park. Whew.......... I don't want to drive it like that very many times. Any suggestions as to what is going on??? There has to be a way to bypass the brake on safety feature before it can be shifted?? I don't need this right now!!
i cant remember how to bypass the brakes, but that would be my suggestion, something to do with the safety switch, check all your fuses that sort of thing too.

Checked all the fuses, they are all good. Not sure where the switch is located. Where's a (free) Ford Mechanic when ya need one??
Yep ,there is only one switch. It is attached to the brake pedal lever by a big pin that is held in place by a cotter pin as best I remember. Little flimsy job with some wires attached. You can probably wiggle it/ rap it or something enought to get your truck home...
The thing to do is to turn the key toward the on position, but not far enough to actually turn anything on. It's that intermediary place between completly off and having the lights and guages come on. By design the shifter is supposed to unlock without having to step on the brakes.
Ever turn the key off without putting it in park? Notice how it won't go all the way to the position where you can now remove the key? That's the park position interlock.
Get the key in the right position but not have the ignition come on and you can pull it out of park, put it in neutral, and start the truck from there. If that doesn't work, then something is truly broken.
Thanks Kwik, it allowed it to move out of park. Going to store that one in what little memory I have left! I am going to replace the switch in the morning and hopefully it will fix the problem. You guys are great, that's why I love this place.

That trick will work with ANY brand, make, model of vehicle that has an automatic installed.
Don't assume it's the ignition switch, it seems to be working. The electomagnet that is locking you in park IS getting energized when you turn the key on. I'm thinking brake light switch or whatever the truck uses to command release of the locking mechanism. Sorry I can't steer you toward specifics on this one, not enough experience. Ask me anything you want about a VW and I can help.
Guess I need to read my posts over before I hit that enter button. When I said I was going to install a new switch in the morning I meant brake light switch, not key switch. Thanks again for the help and offer on VW info but I am a Ford man, never owned a Vdub.
I had the same thing happen on my 97 F150 gasser i went to the parts store and got a new switch but after i installed it i got to looking and it was not the switch it was one of the wires it was broke inside so i stripped it and repaired it.
i did not know i had beed driving around with no brake lights sometimes lol
i hope this helps
Well, I am a little embarassed......... I went back out this morning before I went to the parts store and re-checked everything. All the fuses I checked yesterday still looked good today. I thought. I started replacing fuses anyway, wouldn't hurt right? When I replaced the one for the brake lights, abs, etc. #13 everything now works. But the old fuse still looks good. Not fried, not broken, not cracked, but definitely not good. Not sure what caused it but it is working fine now. Thanks for the help and suggestions guys. Think I will buy a 6-pack of Heineken with the money I saved from not buying a brake light switch, and celebrate. Wouldn't hurt........
