Just sounds rough

Have a F-350, V-10 and it sounds strange to me.
I am used to the 7.5L, F-250 and it's a bit different.

The manual states " DO NOT EXCEED RED LINE " my tach
has no red line!

I would guess 3500 would be a good redline, anybody know?

Hello burnbomb and welcome to the best ford web site on the net you will be able to find some great info here The V-10 has a sound all its own and you will get used to it when you seee how much power you have and I have even got to like the sound of it! As far as the red line your truck has a computer controlled Rev limiter and that will shut the truck down before you do any damage These trucks runnn allot higher RPMs than any V8 and it takes some getting used to. I run in the 4000 rpm range all the time when pullinng and have no problems. Hope this will help and stick around there tons of guys around here that have some good info

Jason,
When you're running at 4000 RPM is the engine roaring at you the entire time? My bro-in-law has a Chevy 6.0 and when towing even light loads with cruise control on, it will downshift on hills and wind up to the point he cuts the cruise control because it sounds like it's gonna fly apart, very noisy. I have a '06 V10 on order and while I was able to test drive one, I knew I wasn't going to buy it so I didn't hammer someone else's truck with 2 miles on it. I'm going from 10 yrs in a '95 PSD to the V10 which will take some getting used to, but I have wondered if the high RPM driving is nerve wracking to a degree.

it has a sound it's own due to the 72 deg's between firing plugs. and it is sound you get used to and love. i drive and tow hard with mine and at 6000 miles have still not been to the dealer for any thing. even got my best gas milage to date this weekend at 16 mpg running 65 mph. that was useing the old way to figure it out.
nerve wracking it's not. truly it's a real smooth running motor that makes me look at the tach to see if it's running

Yes at first I had a real hard time getting used to the higher RPMs I would back off the gas and take it easy, But after a while around here I found that running high RPMs is where you get into the real power of this truck! I have drove many PSD and you will need a little time to adjust but these engines are made to runn at higher RPMs. I pulled my TT to CO. last year and ran around 3200 to 3500 RPM most of the way and when I was going up a good grade and kicked it down I was in the 4200 range. It does sound diff. but not like it is going to come apart....... You cant compair a V-10 to a V-8.(apples and oranges)

Sounds like you will have plenty of time to read around FTE before you get your new truck so take some time and please do so. I have found some good helpfull stuff here

Thanks to all responses, you confirmed what I suspected.

I finally realized it sounded better at higher rpm's and said
if it blows it blows, it didn't.

My old engine (1995 F-250 7.5L) sounded like it would blow
at 3500.

The comment on the 16mpg is interesting.
I know I am getting better mileage than before (11mpg?),
of course I have a Reg. Cab P.U. not an Excursion.
It couldn't be much lighter.

Sorry if I'm rambling, Thanks again!

Red line is about 5250, exactly the divisible number in the torque times rpm divided by equation. Your 7.5 liter while not coming apart at 3500 rpm, was close to max. The 6.8 V-10 however will run all day at 5250 rpm. You may not like it, but the engine won't have a problem. Lighter pistons, crank, connecting rods and of course the overhead cams all contribute to easier duty at higher rpm. It will take you awhile to get used to a higher rpm motor, but it gets addictive, so beware. It's best slid into gently, too much of a good thing may overload your senses. And while I don't recall anyone having a BSEG permanently freezing your face, like when your mom said don't cross your eyes or they'll get stuck like that ? Well yea, you don't want to risk that big, ole, s-eating grin taking up permanent resisdence on your face. Your wife will think you're doing th babysitter. Your boss will think you're stealing from the company and your priest will think,,,well,,,,better leave that one alone. Peace out ! Ken

My parents decided they need to spend thier retirement in Montana, I am getting the call when the trailers need hauling, do to my fathers GM 6.5 diesel being down (weak). I just pulled their seriously overloaded catering supplies trailer up to Billings, MT from UT for them. About 9000 lbs. I thought i had a weak truck for a while, I was afraid to run the revs past 3500. I traded a 7.3 IDI for this V-10, and you get programmed to run lower revs in a diesel. I stopped in Butte, MT and logged on to the net, was reading this forum, and got some good advice.

I hit the hills with a vengance after that, 4000 rpm 4500 rpm, she pulled that trailer up the hills better than i would have expected to tell you the truth. It was enough to put a bseg on my face, and its hard to impress me with pulling power, I run 600 horses in my Kenworth.

It was a hard choice for me to buy a gasser when i bought this truck. I had a hell of a time signing the papers on it, but I left my regrets on Homestake pass in MT.
