I was told the sensor is all pluged up and wont send a sgnal.
It is past the last mark in the gauge. can some one tell me were the sensor it and if it is cleanable as i need the tach to work when i go to have it inspected here in nh
If the tach sender was not working you would have transmision irregularities ie hard shifts or limp mode would be all you get. I think the guage may be the problem, if you want the tach test click on my name and email me.
To check the sender first.......
The dead tach should send the trans into a "failure management mode" (limp mode) with harsh engagements and firm shift feel, and an abnormal shift schedule.
Replace the tach sender on the oil fill housing a big 1" nut with 2 wires. Ford only part Engine RPM sensor E5TZ-17B384-A about $50. You can remove and clean it but usually changed later too. You can test it too, hold it in the air away from ferrous metal, using an ohm meter lead on each wire you need DC resistance between 2000-3000 ohms.
when my tac sensor went the tac went to zero and you being a standard you will not get the same problems that us e4od guys have
your tac being peged at the top might be the gage itself
hate to jump in here but my tach doesnt work upon initial start up it has always started to work in oh 2 - 10 minutes but i have the e4od so i wait for it to work so my tranny shifts does that sound like a rpm sesnor problem ?? once it starts working itll be fine all day until it sits all night then the next mmorning no tach again every few days it will work right away but useually not any help apreciated

Hi,
I had exactly the same problem in my 1990 7.3 F250. Then, the tach stopped working altogether - I still had good (although different) shifts, but after some investigation, I replaced the RPM sensor - now the tach works from the second the engine kicks over.
