I've got an '88 F250 351ci 4x4 pickup with 3:55 ratio differentials. Fuel mileage is lousy and I'm thinking conversion. The truck is in superb condition and I need to know what components will be required to make the switch. Anybody out there with experience with this conversion??? If so please provide info. regarding component ID, parts cost, and vehicle performance.
I would not recomend this procedure. By the time you spend the money on the od tranny, transfer case, electrical harnesses, computer, driveshaft mods, and crossmember mods, you could probably buy your own fuel refinery. Then, after all this, if you ever need a tranny rebuild, your looking at $2000 for the E4od compared to $700-$800 for the C6. Its not a worth while trade-off as far as I am concerned. But thats just my opinion, I could be wrong.
I think i'd have to agree with nathan. The C-6 trans is bulletproof. If you need the overdrive, you could do it cheaper by using the AOD (the early non-electronic one) but they are not very durable. I had one in my '86 and had it rebuilt twice. I'd stick with the C-6.
I would agree with the above posts. I would not make this swap. The difference in gas mileage might be 2-3 miles to the gallon. My story goes like this I had a 88 Big Bronco with the 351W and C-6 automatic, got rid of it and got a 90 Big Bronco with the 302 and AOD automatic and thats about all the difference was. and I'd say it was probably only 2 mpg difference. The 90 got about 11-13mpg in town and that was tuned to the max! About 14-15 highway trips. The 88 got 10-11 in town. Like said above also the C-6 is a very good transmission.
