hey All, 86 F-150, 305 4 speed manual......is it possible to shim the starter on this truck??? Once it's running the bedix gear stays out and is making a hell of a noise on the flywheel. The noise was much less with the original starter but I've installed a new one and it's naturally louder due to more metal on the gear. With it staying engaged, it's running the battery dead within a very short time period (as I found out with the old starter) but i don't leave it running for more than a few seconds now as i don't want to have to buy another starter. I've tried 2 different solinoids, all cables/connections have been cleaned.
So.....any ideas or suggestions are welcome. I'm not too experienced with Fords (but I'm getting there). Please e-mails any ideas directly to me at doug @ madmaxcar.com
Thanks
two things to check, Make sure you bought the starter for the manual trans, there is a diffrence in the starter for a auto vs manual. also, if the starter is staying out and draining your battery, then your solenoid is stuck on, because it is either old or maybe your ignition switch isnt going back to run. try starting it and wiggle the key back to run.
well........the new starter I had put in (was removed from a project car I have) ended up being no good either as i bought another stater and all is well......just goes to show that new/rebuilt parts are not perfect either.
Thanks for the reply and advise......keep on truckin!!!!!
