1983 f-250 with dura spark III ignition will not idle smoth and will not hardly pull in gear with major spark knocking when in gear it has new plug and wires and distributor also tried another ignition box any body have any ideas
Could just be the duraspark III system. They work in conjuction with a computer, and a computer controlled feedback carb. If any one sensor, the computer, the carb, or ignition settings are off, things will run like crap.
The computers themselves were notorious for burning up.
Easiest thing to do with these is to find a truck with the same engine in a wrecking yard, but has Duraspark II ignition and non-feedback carb. Remove the computer, and convert back to Duraspark II, non-feedback carb, and eliminate 99.9% of your troubleshooting woes.
You will need the carb and base gasket, all ignition parts including distributor, spark control box, and anything else you can see attached to it. It's likely one of the easiest(plug and play) as well as best modifications you can make to a truck like this.
The wiring on your own truck will have similar colored wires that plug into the spark control box and distributor, but you may need to move wires around in the plug to make them match up. Ford was notorius for changing the wires around a bit.
