Engine ID

Where can I find the engine ID on a supposed 84
351W. I thought it was on the right hand side down
by the starter, but when I called a dealer they said it was an engineering # and not a engine ID.

Engine ID

I have a Haynes that says to check on the valve covers for an identification decal. If it is a Windsor there should be a "W" in the upper left-hand corner of the decal. The book goes on to say that earlier models also had an "ID tag" usually "located at the front of the engine under a major component such as the ignition coil, dipstick mounting bracket or the coolant temperature sending unit." It further says, "If the tag or decal has been lost or obliterated, it's still possible to identify the engine, using the group of numbers and letters stamped on the engine block which make up the build date code. The build date code is usually found on a machined surface on the front of the block at the upper or lower right side corner." But it doesn't tell how to use the info from the build date code. I acquired a '71 351C and it had both the decal and the tag. Good luck!
