I'm getting to remove the top on my '92 Bronco for the summer, and I've got two questions:
I'd like to store the top in my garage, tied up to the cieling. I once saw a sort of kit that was a system of pulleys and ratchets to raise it up there. I've been searching for this, and can't find it. Does anyone know what I'm talking about, and have info on where I could get something like that?
Two - I've been thinking about getting the soft-top from broncograveyard.com here.
Does anybody have this top, and if so, how do you like it? It looks like I'll need to drill a ton of holes. How is this top installed? Do all those snaps go into brackets that I install, or do I really have to drill all those holes into the sides of the body? Once I have the top installed, how is it to switch back to the hard-top for the winter?
Thanks for any help and info you can provide. I searched for this stuff in the forum already, I just couldn't find the answers that I was looking for.
I inherited my uncle's sling rig for the top. Basically, you have a 2x6 (I think) spreader bar and a 2x8 that the top rests on front and back. It all goes up to the garage ceiling at the beam and uses a cable ratchet come-a-long to raise it up just enough to drive out from under it. Works great though. Top stays suspended and I can back in the garage under it and still keep her dry and locked up at night. I'm not gonna drill holes in the body. A local upholstery shop owner is also a Bronco driver and makes up bikini tops that clip on and don't require drilling. Yeah, they don't keep all the rain out, just most of it. I guess I'm glad the rear area is Herculined and doesn't have carpet. He's getting started on a new (to him) '96 Bronco and is gonna put an F250 motor and axles under it. He has gotten a large sunroof that takes up almost the entire top section of the cap and is trying to see if he can put the lift out sunroof in the cap. With the glass out it would be almost like the top was off. It looks really kewl, especially if it works. (Cause the top will fit my Bronco!)
The sling can be made from 4 pulleys a large eyebolt 4 eye screws and 4 s hooks and the crank from a boat winch.
Take two 2x4 roughly 6" longer than the width of the truck top screw a 1/2" screw eye into the top surface on each end. Put the 4 pullys on the cieling where you will back under. Put the large eye bolt on the cieling directly above where you want to mount the crank. Run a 1/4" rope from each corner of your truck top through the puley across to the eyebolt and down to the crank. Keep them long for now. Attach all four ropes to the crank. Back your truck under the pulleys. Loosen the top. Slide the 2x4s under the front and the back of the top (push up from inside with your back and you can do this by yourself) Tie an "S" hook on to each rope leaving the same amount of slack in the rope and hook the 2x4s. Crank up the top a little, You may need to adjust some of the knots to get the top level the first time but after that, It will be a no brainer.
I'll have to try that this weekend - if it stops raining around here. Once I get it working, I'll try to post up some pictures so I can try to help others out wanting to do the same thing.
Thanks for the help on that question guys! (Though I'm still curious to hear from anyone that might have that tonneau cover. )
