I have a 1988 F-250 460 7.5L 3/4 ton Custome.Last few years ive been getting sounds from the flywheel area in 4th gear when the truck warms up pulling a heavy load.It sounds like somthing is shuttering.Plus when i back up it will make a screeching rubbing noise. When you step on the clutch to correct it and let off i hear a clunk.Even in N when you let off the clutch it clunks.I had a new flywheel put in about 10 years ago and paid about $1100.00 for it to be replaced. If i find out it was just resurfaced do i have a recourse back at the shop.I think i post this before, but never looked into it.I looked for the post just cant find it.Thanks.
It sounds like you have a chattering pressure plate, if I had to guess from 1,000 miles away. The clunk may be the throw-out bearing on the fingers. Civil liability in Georgia at least has a two year statute of limitations for action to be filed. I have no clue as to your area. Depends on the shop and their integrity, 10 years is a good lifetime for a clutch in a heavy usage situation. Our lumber trucks, L-9000's and F-800's average 3 years on a clutch at best. Of course they are actually "off-road" during material delivery and while you can engage the traction lock on the tandems, there is still some propensity to "slip the clutch" especially in slick, wet Georgia clay.
Heavy460,
Just have them show you the worn out parts when done. In a heavy duty you should have an access point at the shifting fork, take a long sharp punch and put two small dots on the pressure plate, doesn't matter where. Look at what you get back. All the best! Have a great weekend/holiday and say a prayer for our veterans and those currently serving.
